Box Score MCKENZIE, Tenn. - The Belhaven volleyball team fell Friday in their Southern States Athletic Conference opener at Bethel University. The Blazers' three match win streak came to an end after losing in three sets with final scores of 18-25, 16-25, and 19-25.
Â
After an early 2-1 lead in favor of the Blazers in the first set, the Wildcats stormed back with an 11-4 run to counter Belhaven's attack.
Â
The Blazers cut the Wildcat lead to four with late kills by sophomore,
Jackie Gunderson, and freshman
Amanda Cherry, but Belhaven's strong efforts weren't enough to keep the Wildcats from claiming the set.
Â
The Blazers found themselves in an early 0-5 hole in the second set, leading head coach
Justin Dee to spend an early timeout. That timeout proved to be beneficial for the Blazers, as it led to kills by junior,
Chae Levy and Cherry.
Â
Although the Blazers made a run at winning the set, service errors hurt their comeback bid, as Belhaven fell to 0-2 in sets.
Â
The third set saw long rallies between the two team with the Blazers and Wildcats exchanging points. With every Wildcat run came the Blazers clawing back into the match. Although the Blazers cut the lead to three, their efforts feel short as the Wildcats won the third set and match.
"Bethel played amazing tonight," said Dee. "This was perhaps their best match of the year, and we didn't match their intensity. We will regroup and get some rest, as we travel to Martin Methodist in hopes of getting our first conference win of the season," said Dee.
Â
The Blazers will travel to Pulaski Tennessee to take on the Redhawks. Saturday's first serve is slated for 2:00 pm. Â
