"It was good to see our team continue their hot hitting, and we got two solid outings in the circle," Head Coach
Kevin Griffin said. "Any time we can pick up two victories in a conference like the SSAC is very rewarding."
The Blazers got multi-hit games from outfielders
Shelby Watson and
Dominique Corona, while each drove in a pair of runs, as well.
Jessica Paris plated two as well, while
Josie Porter,
Emily Todd, and
Katy Adair each contributed a base hit to the effort.
It proved to be plenty to aid Paris (11-2) in the circle, as the senior surrendered two runs on five hits while striking out seven and going the distance. She bested Faulkner's Chelsey Dunnaway (3-12), who was hit with the loss after allowing six Belhaven runs in just four innings. Mattie Dotson hurled the final three innings for the home team, giving up the final two runs of the contest while striking out two.
Kendra Orozco and Avery Mott each drove in a run for the Lady Eagles, with the latter posting a multi-hit game. Three Faulkner hitters drew walks, but the home team was unable to come away with a victory on Senior Day.
The nightcap saw the Blazers' offense erupt for five runs in the first inning before adding three in the fourth and one more in the fifth to complete the mercy rule victory. Belhaven outhit their hosts 12-2 and a handful of Blazers contributed to the cause.
Three Belhaven hitters found a two-hit game, highlighted by
Josie Porter's home run in the top of the fifth inning. Corona and
Ashlee Hitt each claimed two base hits, while Adair drove in three runs with her first inning double.
Ginger Lonergan (13-3) picked up the victory in the circle for the Blazers, surrendering just two hits to the Lady Eagles. The Belhaven senior struck out four and walked two, while Natalie Walker (2-4) was on the wrong end of the Blazers' first. Walker allowed seven runs over just 3.1 innings, while Dotson again gave up the final two.
Keri Hyde and Katie Goodson were the entire offense for Faulkner in the series finale, and the 14th-ranked Blazers rolled to their fourth consecutive victory.
The Blazers will return to action when they will host in-state SSAC rival William Carey University in the team's final home doubleheader of the year. First pitch from McLeod Field is set for 2:00 pm.
"We have more big conference games that could help us move into a higher seed with two wins," Griffin said. "If we continue to hit the ball the way we have the last week and a half, I expect good results from our team.
