Blazers Collect 21 Hits in Alcorn State Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven softball team (12-2) picked up a pair of victories on Monday afternoon, defeating NCAA Division-I Alcorn State by a final of 9-1 in back to back games. With the wins, the Blazers ran their streak to seven, with the last five coming by way of the mercy rule.

"Any time our bats get going, they click in a big way, and with us, hitting is contagious," Head Coach Kevin Griffin said. "Everyone is taking advantage of their opportunities."

The Blazers turned to senior pitcher Katy Adair in the circle for the first game, and the right hander lasted all six innings. She allowed just one run on six hits, while walking one and fanning three en route to her third victory of the campaign.

Adair helped her own effort at the plate, driving in three runs while scoring another. Josie Porter contributed a 2 for 3 effort and scored three runs, while Dominique Corona posted a multi-hit game as well, including her second home run of the season.

Alcorn State starter Jazmin Castillo was hit with the loss, allowing nine runs on nine hits and five walks through 5.2 innings pitched. Third baseman Raven Riggs drove in the only run of the ballgame for the Braves.

The nightcap saw senior Ginger Lonergan enter the pitching circle with an undefeated record on the line, and she responded by continuing her recent hot streak. Lonergan struck out two and allowed just three hits and one Alcorn State run in her five innings of work to move to 5-0 for the season.

"It seems like any time I give Ginger the ball, she comes up big for us," Griffin said. "She came through with another stellar performance today."

The bats went to work early, as the Blazers posted four runs in each of the first two innings against Braves starter Paxton Cathcart. The right hander allowed nine runs on 12 Belhaven hits while walking three and striking out a pair.

Senior Denee' Crawford's first swing of the afternoon left the park for her first home run of the year, while shortstop Emily Todd followed with a long ball of her own just an inning later. Ashlee Hitt added a pair of base hits and 2 RBI, and the Blazers cruised to their seventh straight victory.

Belhaven will return to action next Tuesday, when they travel to Alcorn State. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1:00 PM.
