HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Men's Basketball team fell to Rust College Monday night, dropping the non-conference game 93-85.
Despite taking a six-point lead into the break, the Blazers (3-10) were unable to stop a hot shooting Rust (3-5) team in the second half and could not hold pace to a late run.
Jordan Bedford and
Jerrial Dawson came out hot for the Blazers in the first 20 minutes combining for 29 of the Blazers 46 first half points. Bedford was 8-for-12 from the field, including three from behind the arc for 20 points.
Dawson added three big threes early to help the Blazers take the lead early on.
De'la Mayers also had a career night blocking in the first half. Mayers came into the game with a season high four blocks in three different games. In the first 20 minutes against Rust, Mayers had five blocks. He would go on to finish with six blocks.
Mayers also finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
All five Blazers' starters finished in double figures in scoring. Bedford led all scorers in the game with 28. Bedford also had three steals.
Dawson added eight more second half points for 17 total. The senior also added five rebounds and four assists.
Josh Carpenter finished with 13 points in the game. He also had six rebounds and five assists.
Datodrick Pinkston finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Pinkston's big contribution came in the assist column, falling one short of a double-double with nine.
Belhaven struggled from the field in the second half. After shooting 59 percent in the first half, the Green and Gold went 11-for-31 (35 percent) in the second half.
Belhaven also struggled from the free-throw line, making just 62 percent (20-of-32) of their attempts.
The Blazers will now set their sights on an exhibition game against NCAA Division I opponent Arkansas State University on Saturday. Tip off is set for 7:05 p.m. from Jonesboro, Ark..
