JONESBORO, Ark. - In an exhibition game against NCAA Division I opponent Arkansas State University, the Belhaven Blazers men's basketball team fell Saturday night 95-68.
The Blazers never led against ASU, but Belhaven did keep the Red Wolves close for most of the contest, only allowing Arkansas State to pull away in the final few minutes.
Josh Carpenter was the top performer for the Green and Gold in the contest, finishing with 16 points and six rebounds. Carpenter also had three assists in the game and a steal.
De'la Mayers led all Belhaven Blazers in scoring on the night, finishing with 19 points. Mayers also grabbed two boards in the game.
The Blazers had three players in double figures, with
Jerrial Dawson using four three pointers en route to 14 points. Dawson also grabbed four steals in the game to go with two rebounds, a block and an assist.
Belhaven finished the game shooting 41.1 percent from the field, but was just 37 percent from beyond the arc.
Arkansas State, who is coached by John Brady, a Belhaven University alum who played for the Blazers until graduating in 1976, shot 50 percent in the game and connected on all but one of their 15 free-throw attempts.
The Blazers will now set their sights on a non-conference battle with Tougaloo on December 13 to close out the 2014 portion of the schedule for the Blazers.
