WEST POINT, Ga. –The Belhaven women's basketball team defeated the Skyhawks of Point University 76-60 in their first road contest of the season. The Blazers (2-0) have started the season with consecutive victories with an average margin of victory of 25 points.
In the first half of play, the Blazers and Skyhawks traded buckets, while both teams tallied similar shooting percentages early. Belhaven shot 25-58 (43%) from the field, while Point shot 25-53 (47%), but the Skyhawks edged the Blazers from three-point range, shooting 43% from behind the arc.
In the second half, the Blazers pulled away from the Eagles, due in large part to
Kenya Wright's game high seven steals. Belhaven almost doubled their first half point total with 50 points coming after the intermission.
Wright finished her afternoon with 17 points while shooting 45% from the field, and the senior guard also added four rebounds and a team high three assists.
Ariel Wilson led all players on the court with 26 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the young season. Wilson and Wright each played all 40 minutes in the win.
The Blazers were balanced in their scoring efforts, as four Blazers reached double figures in the game. Point's Dereese Owens led the Skyhawks in scoring with 22 points and was the lone Skyhawk player with at least ten points
The Blazers dominated on the defensive side of the ball, winning the turnover battle by a 25-9 tally. Belhaven's Tashayla Steede picked up the only two rejections in the game for the Blazers.
Belhaven won both the battle of efficiency at the free throw line as well the battle of the boards. The Blazers shot 23-28 (82%) at the charity stripe and outrebounded the Skyhawks 37-25.
The Blazers will lace up their sneakers again as they travel to Tyler, Texas for a battle against Texas College on Tuesday. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
