Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Belhaven men's basketball team suffered a loss in their first conference contest of the season, falling 77-71 to Faulkner University. The loss dropped the Blazers to 2-7 overall, while the Eagles improved to 5-1.
De'la Mayers turned in the most impressive night of any player on the floor, tallying 35 points and 14 rebounds.
Jordan Bedford was the only other Blazer in double figures in any category, contributing 13 points of his own.
Five Faulkner Eagles scored ten or more points, while Cortez Riley highlighted the effort for the home team. Cortez recorded 19 points and hauled in eight rebounds, both good enough for best on the squad.
Faulkner won the turnover battle by forcing 19 and committing only 12, and the Eagles also knocked down 81% of shots from the charity stripe. Belhaven bested their hosts by shooting 48% from the floor and 35% from behind the three point arc. Aided largely by Mayers, the Blazers outrebounded the Eagles 39-29 but came up just short on the scoreboard.
Belhaven is set to return to action on Tuesday, when they host Mississippi College at Rugg Arena. Opening tip is slated for 7:00 pm.
