JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven women's basketball team defeated Texas College 64-54 in a tightly contested matchup
on Tuesday night to improve to 5-0 on the season.
"It was a tough win for us today," said head coach
Steve Calder. "Whenever you play a team twice within a week it's tough because the team knows your tendencies."
The Blazers finished the first half of play with a 10-point cushion. The Lady Steers came roaring into the second half with two early buckets that narrowed the gap. Belhaven finished with a run and solid free throw shooting to seal the contest.
Ariel Wilson led all Blazers in both points and assists with 19 and seven, respectively.
TaShayla Steede added a double-double with 15 point and 13 rebounds.
The Lady Steers were led by Jenee Stevenson's 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Offensively, the Lady Steers were slightly more efficient than the Blazers, shooting 31.7 percent from the field, while the Blazers shot 30.3 percent.
The Blazers edged the Lady Steers in the assist column, tallying 15 dimes to Texas College's nine on the night.
On the defensive end, the Belhaven turned Texas College over 21 times, while only surrendering 10 of its own. The Blazers have won the turnover margin in all of the five contests this season.
Candler Gregory finished with the lone blocked shot for the Blazers.
The Blazers will travel to Montgomery, Ala. on Friday to take on Faulkner University in Southern States Athletic Conference play. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 pm.
