Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Jordan Herrod

Blazers slip in overtime, fall 94-88 to Steers

JACKSON, Miss. – After a narrow win against Texas College last Tuesday, the Belhaven men's basketball team fell 94-88 in overtime to the same team on Tuesday night at Rugg Arena. The Steers picked up their third win of the year to move to .500, while the Blazers fell to 2-6.

"We came out with very little energy, and this was the worst first half we've had all year. We had a little more pep in our step in the second half, but our late game execution was as poor as I've seen," Head Coach Jonathan Vines said. "We can't keep digging ourselves in those kinds of holes and expect to climb out every time. We have to learn from the situation."

Senior Jordan Bedford highlighted the offensive effort the Blazers, connecting on eight shots from the field and seven free throws to lead all scorers with 27 points. DaTodrick Pinkston tallied a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Jerrial Dawson added 12 points.

Blake Turner led Texas College in points with 18, and Roy Shelton was the only other starter to find his way into double figures. Percy Evans, Darrelle Flowers, and Sebastian Opon combined for 36 of the 37 points scored from the Steer bench.

Texas College outrebounded their hosts 53-45, but Belhaven's 45 percent efficiency from the field bested the Steers' 41percent. The Blazers shot 38 percent from three-point range and 61.5 percent from the free throw line, while Texas College countered with a 35 percent effort from behind the arc and 57 percent at the charity stripe.

Belhaven returns to action on Friday, when they take on Faulkner University in the Southern States Athletic Conference opener. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 pm from Montgomery.

"We have to learn from our mistakes, and we've made some of them all season," Vines said. "We're going to have to give a much better effort than we gave tonight, and we have to execute down the stretch."
