Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | RIcky Howard

Women's Basketball extends streak on Wilson's hot hand

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's basketball team extended its season-opening winning streak to four games with a comfortable 66-48 victory over crosstown rival Tougaloo College.  The Blazers have feasted against their first four opponents, winning by an average margin of 23.5 points per game.

"We played fundamental basketball in all aspects of the game," said head coach Steve Calder. When we play together, good results will continue to come for us."

Ariel Wilson spearheaded Belhaven's offensive attack, shooting over 56 percent from the field (13-23) and 50 percent from three-point range. Wilson's 33-point outing tied her previous career high, and her nine rebounds landed her just shy of her second double-double on the young season.

"When a player is in the zone, you have to get her the ball. She was hitting shots from everywhere, which opened up the floor for other players," said Calder.

Kenya Wright added nine points and eight assists, while Jasmine Brown also added nine points in the contest.

After leading at the half by only six points, the Blazers continued to extend their lead to a comfortable 10-plus point margin throughout the second half.

The Blazers made 25 of 62 attempts from the field in the game, while holding the Rams to 35 percent shooting from the field.

There were six Blazers with at least one assist on the night. Collectively, the Blazers tallied 17 assists and finished with a season low 11 turnovers.

The Blazers also won the battle of the boards, snatching 42 team rebounds in the contest.

Belhaven will lace up their sneakers next Tuesday as they host Texas College at Rugg Arena. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
