Men's Soccer finishes regular season with third straight win

COCHRAN, Ga. – The Belhaven men's soccer team defeated Middle Georgia State College 4-2 on Saturday in the regular season finale. The Blazers have now won four of their last five games heading into the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.

"Today was another tough match on the road in difficult conditions," Head Coach Carl Griffiths. "Gusting winds made it difficult to execute our style of play, but in the end we got the job done."

Joao Belmonte found Rodolfo Lopes in the fourth minute of the game to start the scoring. The Blazers were able to find the net again in the 27th minute to go on top 2-0. Rasmus Arousell recorded the first score for the Knights with just 44 seconds remaining in the first half, as Belhaven carried a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Cillian Thompson's seventh goal of the year came 31 minutes into the second half, tying him with Victor Lawrence for a team high. Sam Rosselli and Oliver Jones teamed up to add Belhaven's final goal just two minutes before Arousell scored his second goal of the game.

Daniel Prado recorded three saves in the net for the Blazers, while Tevin West matched him on the other side. The Blazers took a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, but each team fired 17 shots, including six on frame for the Blazers.

Belhaven returns to action on Saturday in the opening round of the conference tournament. Opponent and time will be released by the SSAC office in Montgomery on Monday afternoon.

"It was important that we finished conference play strong to give us momentum as we approach the tournament," Griffiths said. "Now we need to focus on getting our players healthy and preparing for tournament play."
