NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Belhaven volleyball team fell to Loyola University - New Orleans 3-2 in a highly contested thriller on Halloween night.
After Belhaven came from behind to win the opening set 25-21, the Wolfpack took matches two and three to grab control of the game.
However, the Blazers edged Loyola in the fourth set 25-23 to send the game to a fifth set tie break. In the shortened set, Belhaven ran with Loyola to the end but ended up dropping the final set 15-13.
"We were very aggressive tonight and our serving was key to making this a very close match," said head coach,
Justin Dee.
Molly Boyer dropped in a team high four serves for aces in the contest, while Aly Plyler and
Jackie Rhyne each had three aces.
Offensively,
Taylor Hall's 14 kills on 38 total attacks powered the Blazers, while Blaykleigh Smyth and Plyler contributed six kills each. Smythe also added four points defensively with three solo blocks and one assisted block on the night.
Kelly Aholt and Plyler set up Belhaven's attack with 20 and 18 assists, respectively.
Rhyne and
Cassidy Fitzpatrick were staples for the Blazers' defense, as they tallied 22 and 12 digs, respectively, in the contest.
The Blazers will travel to Mobile, Ala. for a crucial SSAC matchup against the University of Mobile tomorrow afternoon. The match is set for a 1 p.m. first serve.
