JACKSON, Miss. – After honoring nine seniors before the opening whistle, the Belhaven men's soccer team picked up their second conference victory of the season Saturday evening by defeating Brewton-Parker College 6-0. The Blazers shut out an opponent for the first time since September 16th, but the Green and Gold have now won two of their last three conference matches.
"It was nice to score some goals on Senior Night, and this was a big win at home," Head Coach
Carl Griffiths said. "I'm pleased with our performance tonight, but we need to take this momentum into next week's games."
John Ledbetter started the scoring in the 15th minute, and
Victor Lawrence and
Jose Presti each added a goal before the team went to the locker room with a 3-0 lead. Presti and Lawrence each found the net for a second time in the second half, and
Diego Dias scored the final goal in the 68th minute.
Brewton-Parker's Bryan Alvarez was on the wrong end of four of Belhaven's scores, while James Rumbaugh surrendered two of his own. For the Blazers,
Daniel Prado recorded five saves and
Austin Mitcham added two more as the duo combined to give Belhaven their first shutout victory in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
Belhaven outshot their guests 20-11, including a 12-7 mark on goal, while also taking a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. With the victory, the Blazers remain unblemished in the all-time series, winning all four meetings between the two teams.
The Blazers are set to return to action on Thursday, when they will travel to Montgomery, Alabama to take on the Faulkner Eagles. The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm from John Mark Stallings Field.
