COLUMBIA, Ky. - The Belhaven Blazers football team lost to No. 14 Lindsey Wilson College Saturday afternoon in a Mid-South Conference cross-division contest, falling to the Blue Raiders 91-14.
The Blazers (2-6) were unable to keep up with the pace of the Blue Raiders (6-2) as seven turnovers by Belhaven, including three for defensive touchdowns, fueled a big game for LWC.
After punting the ball on the opening drive, Belhaven allowed a Lindsey Wilson touchdown on their first possession to go up 7-0. After a couple of quick drives resulting in no points, the Blue Raiders scored again on Belhaven to go up by 14.
On the ensuing two possessions, and 1:02 apart, Lindsey Wilson added two more touchdowns with interception returns of 28 and 64 yards for scores. Belhaven trailed 28-0 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the Blazers struggled to move the ball again and great field position for Lindsey Wilson led to five touchdowns and a 63-0 lead before Belhaven got on the scoreboard.
On the second to last play of the first half,
Darien Thomas caught an 11-yard pass from
Eric Mosley to give Belhaven its first points of the game.
Thomas would end up catching both of Belhaven's touchdowns, including a 5-yard one in the fourth quarter. He finished with seven receptions for 38 yards.
In the third quarter, the Blazers gave up two big passing plays of 83 and 56 yards for 1-play touchdown drives. The second play came off of a fumble forced by the Blazers defense but was still scooped for a 56-yard score by Lindsey Wilson.
A fumble recovered in the end zone accounted for the other seven points for LWC in the third quarter.
Belhaven finished with just 317 yards of total offense on 110 plays, which was a school record for the Blazers in the game. Belhaven's passing attack accounted for 277 yards of offense on 75 pass attempts, but also had six interceptions. The pass attempts matched a school record for a single game.
Steven Joiner and
Queondre Wynn led the Blazers in tackles on defense with seven a piece. Wynn had 1.5 tackles for a loss.
Greg Livingston led all receivers with 12 catches in the game. Livingston finished with 76 yards, averaging 6.3 yards per catch.
Belhaven will wrap up its road schedule next Saturday with a trip to Montgomery, Ala. for a game against No. 6 Faulkner University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
