JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven volleyball team fell 3-1 to Southern States Athletics opponent Bethel University on Friday night. The Wildcats sweep the Blazers on the season, after defeating the Belhaven in early September. The Blazers fall to 10-12 overall and 1-9 in SSAC play.
"Collectively, we did a great job offensively and defensively, and did some things to keep ourselves in the match, but Bethel was too strong," said head coach
Justin Dee.
After losing the first two sets 20-25, 22-25, respectively, the Blazers won a clutch third set 25-23. Bethel was too strong in the fourth and final set, winning 25-19. Bethel improves to 11-8 overall and 7-3 in SSAC play.
Junior,
Taylor Hall anchored the offensive attack for the Blazers, as she led with 17 kills on 45 total attacks. Freshman,
Blaykleigh Smythe also made her presence felt on the offensive end, adding 10 kills on 21 attacks. Senior, Aly Plyler continues to set the Blazers up, tallying 22 assists. Freshman,
Kelly Aholt added 17 assists on the night.
Defensively, Junior,
Jackie Rhyne and sophomore,
Jackie Gunderson led the Blazers, contributing 29 and 16 digs apiece. Junior,
Molly Boyer paced the Blazers with three block assists on the night.
Bethel's Daisy Liljenquist led the floor in kills with 20 and 53 total attacks, a high for both teams.
The Blazers will host conference opponent Martin Methodist tomorrow evening. The first serve is slated for 6:00 pm.
