Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – The Belhaven men's basketball team suffered a 100-88 Southern States Athletic Conference loss at the hands of Spring Hill College Saturday in Mobile, Alabama. The two conference foes battled back and forth in the first half before the Badgers pulled away in the final period.

Saturday's game featured 11 ties and 14 lead changes, mainly in the first half. Belhaven's (7-9, 5-3 SSAC) largest lead of the afternoon was three points, occurring on three separate occasions.
Jordan Bedford gave the Blazers their first three point edge with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half on a pair of free throws. At the 4:42 mark,
Luke Rogers put Belhaven up again by three at 28-25 on a triple setup by
Curt Hall, who was credited with the assist.
Trailing 37-36 late in the first half,
Chris Cofield knocked down a jumper with 11 seconds on the clock, sending the Blazers into the locker room with a 38-37 lead. Unfortunately, it did not hold up in the second half as Spring Hill (3-14, 2-5 SSAC) took the lead for good on back to back field goals by Alex Looney two minutes in. At that point, the lead was 43-41 before growing to 15 points with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Belhaven was unable to mount a comeback in the final minutes.
Jordan Bedford had a remarkable night, scoring a season and career high 32 points against Spring Hill. Bedford was perfect at the free throw line, connecting on all 12 attempts. He went 8 for 18 from the field and knocked down four three pointers. In addition, Bedford hauled in five rebounds.
Joining Bedford in double figures on the stat sheet was Cofield with 16 points while
Jonathan Ratliff and
Deon Bedford chipped in 10 apiece. Ratliff guided the Blazers on the glass with seven rebounds.
As a team, Belhaven struggled from the field (39.3%) and behind the three point arc (33.3%), but stayed close because of the performance at the free throw line. The Blazers recorded a season high 30 free throws on 39 attempts, which is also tied for fourth most in a single game in school history. The last time Belhaven made 30 from the charity stripe was January 19th, 2012 at home against William Carey. The school record is 41 set in 1982.
Spring Hill was led by Robert Gipson with 30 points off the bench on the strength of 10 of 12 shooting from the field. Looney fired in 19 points and Jarrett Calhoun cashed in 15 to round out the double digit scorers. Frederick Gatson notched a team high eight rebounds and added eight points of his own. He also contributed five assists.
The Badgers were nearly unstoppable from the field where they made good on 64.3 percent of their shot attempts (36-56). They were 11 of 18 from three point range (61.1%), and made 17 of 23 at the free throw line (73.9%). Spring Hill also held the edge in rebounding 38-30.
Belhaven will look to get back on track Thursday night as the team heads to McKenzie, TN for a Southern States Athletic Conference battle with Bethel University. The tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
