Volleyball Stumbles at SUNO

Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Belhaven volleyball team fell to 2-3 on the season after dropping three consecutive sets against Southern University New Orleans on Tuesday. The final set scores were 12-25, 20-25, and 21-25. The loss snapped a two match win streak for the Blazers after the team claimed a pair of wins on Saturday at the Hendrix Invitational.

With injured senior setter Alyson Plyler sitting out for the second time in as many matches, Belhaven was forced to alter personnel. Senior defensive specialist Gabriella Zorzoli and freshman outside hitter Mallory Church filled the void comfortably, accumulating 12 assists apiece. Taylor Lafavre led the way in kills with seven.

"We played a good team tonight that took advantage of our weaknesses," Head Coach Justin Dee said. "Gabe and Mallory did a wonderful job of setting, but we couldn't get the ball to where our outside hitters were able to put an attack on the ball."

With Zorzoli forced to focus on offense, senior Katherine Owen led the way defensively, passing effectively and picking up 17 digs.

"We gave up lot of free balls and their middles made us pay," Dee said. "We missed Gabe on defense, but Katie really was a huge bright spot for us tonight."

The Blazers will return to action on Friday when they head to Tyler, Texas for tournament action. Their first match is slated for 2:00 pm against East Texas Baptist University, with a match against host University of Texas-Tyler to follow.
