Box Score CLINTON, Mississippi – The Belhaven volleyball team (5-11) picked up a 3-1 non-conference victory over Mississippi College on Tuesday night with final set scores of 25-12, 13-25, 26-24, and 25-20.
"I'm not sure we have anyone that is 100% right now, but our first set was flawless," Head Coach
Justin Dee said. "This was a team win, as they gave great effort in whatever was asked of them."
The defense was anchored by senior
Gabriella Zorzoli, who finished the evening with 17 digs, while fellow defensive specialist
Katherine Owen totaled 13.
Sophomore
Molly Boyer led the offensive charge for the Blazers, accumulating 13 kills, while freshman
Jackie Gunderson contributed 10 of her own.
Taylor Hall and
Brittany Ammons added seven and eight, respectively.
Junior
Alyson Plyler served as the team's primary setter once again Tuesday, tallying 21 assists. Freshman
Mallory Church and Zorzoli chipped in nine apiece.
"Jackie stepped up today and took control often, Molly made some wonderful decisions, and Aly fought through her ailments," Dee said. "We had to have several people play different situations, but they battled and fought a rival on the road to a great victory."
Rachel Janssen's three kills highlighted the match for Mississippi College, while sophomore Pollyann Scruggs' 18 assists proved to be the best on the squad. The hosts spread the ball around well on the defensive side, with freshman Kelsey Burnis finishing her night with nine digs.
The Blazers return home on Friday, when they resume Southern States Athletic Conference action against Southern Wesleyan University. The match is set to being at 7:00 pm at Rugg Arena.
"We have a huge match against an undefeated conference foe on Friday, and our team goal is to remain undefeated at home," Dee said. "If everyone is healthy, it will be a competitive game."
