Box Score 2 CONWAY, Ark. - The Belhaven volleyball team took the court Saturday in the Hendrix Tournament against Philander Smith and Centenary College. The Blazers looked to bounce back after tough losses against LeTourneau University and Williams Baptist on Friday Night. Belhaven was able to do just that with two wins.
"After a slow start against Centenary (LA) in the first two sets, we got things in the final three to pick up a much needed win," said Head Coach
Justin Dee. "
Katherine Owen did an amazing job defensively and
Brittany Ammons along with Taylor LaFavre led us offensively."
The Blazers overcame a 0-2 deficit to pull out three consecutive wins 25-15, 25-14, and 15-10 to take the match.
Senior
Brittany Ammons led the Blazers with 19 kills and freshman
Jackie Gunderson followed with 11 kills of her own.
Belhaven started slowly again in the second match against Philander Smith. For the second time in as many matches, the Blazers found themselves down 2-0. However, they found a way to win despite some adversity.
Belhaven's lone setter
Alyson Plyler was forced to sit out the second match due to an injury, and according to Dee, the team struggled early trying to find someone who could run the offense. The Blazers eventually found their rhythm and got things going in the right direction starting in the third set.
"The offense came around and our serving got much more consistent," Dee said. "We were able to ride the left arm of
Brittany Ammons to the win. Gabe (Zorzoli) did an amazing job filling in for Aly (Plyler) and the ladies did a wonderful of finishing strong picking up two wins."
Ammons led the Blazers with 19 kills and freshman
Jackie Gunderson followed with 11 kills of her own in both matches.
The Blazers got a spark from
Mallory Church with 12 assists and
Gabriella Zorzoli had 45 assists in place of Plyler to solidify the setting in the second match.
Katherine Owen recorded 32 digs on the heels of a 42 dig performance in the first match to spark the defense Saturday.
The Blazers finished the Hendrix Tournament with a 2-2 record and look to keep the momentum from their two match winning streak going. Belhaven will take the court again at Southern University of New Orleans on Tuesday night. The opening serve is slated for 6:00 PM.
