Volleyball Falls to LeTourneau, Williams Baptist

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CONWAY, Ark. – The Belhaven volleyball team opened the season with a match in the Hendrix Tournament against LeTourneau University and followed it with another against Williams Baptist University. The opening match saw the Blazers fall in three consecutive sets before dropping the second match three sets to one.

"We have to regroup and reassess our goals. We need to bring our first contact and our third contact together," Dee said. "We are working hard at building a team identity."

Senior Brittany Ammons was the lone spark for the Blazers in their first match, racking up 13 kills against LeTourneau.

"We couldn't get the first contact to our setter, and they served us right out of the match," Head Coach Justin Dee said. "Our middles played well, but we couldn't get the ball to them. Starting five underclassmen showed in that first match.

The afternoon improved against Williams Baptist, as senior Alyson Plyler accumulated 24 assists in her first action as the team's full-time setter. Sophomore Mallory Church added three kills off the bench.

"The second match started great, and we got out to a nice lead in the first set against Williams Baptist. Our passing was great, but we had four straight attack errors," Dee said. "We took a set away from Williams, but errors and miscommunication did us in."

Those errors include a combined 16 reception errors and 48 attack errors between the two matches, though the Blazers did manage to sneak in 15 service aces.

The Blazers will return to action at 10 AM Saturday against Centenary College before taking on Philander Smith College at 2:00 for their final match of the tournament.
