Blazers Chalk up Two More Wins

Box Score vs. Campbellsville    Box Score vs. Milligan
DECATUR, Ala. – The Belhaven softball team continued its strong start to the season by taking the first two games of the Shorter Invitational on Friday evening . The Blazers beat Campbellsville University (KY) in the first game 8-5 before handing Milligan College an 11-1 loss in the nightcap.

Belhaven kicked things off with a bang in the first inning of their game against the Campbellsville Tigers by scoring four runs again starting pitcher Courtney Turpin. The Blazers knocked Turpin out of the game after only two thirds of an inning and took a commanding lead right off the bat.

The Blazers first three batters, Jordan Cole, Lizzy Hess and Denee' Crawford all reached base to start the game, which included an RBI single by Crawford to plate Cole to start off the scoring. Belhaven would go on to score three more runs while batting around the order to take the big lead.

Shelby Watson, Belhaven's starting pitcher, was strong through one and a third innings before the Blazers' ace pitcher Katy Adair took over.

Belhaven built up a seven run cushion for Adair, who gave up five runs in the fifth and sixth inning, before eventually tacking on a final run in the top of the seventh.

Adair was credited for the victory, her second of the season, after allowing the five runs in 5.2 innings. Crawford finished 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in a team-high three runs to pace the Blazers in the win.

In the second game of the evening, Belhaven took on the Milligan College from Tennessee and walloped the Buffaloes 11-1.

Junior Jessica Paris got the start for Belhaven and went the distance, striking out six over seven innings of work. Paris only surrendered one earned run and six hits in a dominate performance during her first extended work of the season.
Cole reached base every time she stepped to the plate against the Buffaloes, going 3-for-3 and scoring two runs for the Blazers. Dominique Corona, the Blazer left fielder, went 2-for-4 in the night game with three RBI to spark the Belhaven scoring effort.

The Blazers and Buffaloes were tied at one after four innings of play, but the Blazers scored three runs in the fifth and six runs in the seventh inning to break open the game.

Belhaven moves to 3-0 on the year with the two victories and will get back to action on Saturday with two more games against Thomas University (Ga.) and Freed-Hardeman (Tn.).  The Blazers will battle Thomas starting at 10:00 AM.
