Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven volleyball team (8-22) wrapped up the 2013 season on Saturday, taking part in the Millsaps College Tri-Match. Belhaven fell in five sets against the Majors by final set scores of 18-25, 24-26, 25-15, 25-21, and 10-15 before dropping consecutive sets to the University of Texas-Dalls by three 15-25 scores.
"This team never took a game off and fought for every set all year long," Head Coach
Justin Dee said. "We will miss the leadership of our seniors, but I am proud of the way we ended the season."
Katherine Owen paved the way defensively for the Blazers in the first match with 34 digs, though fellow senior
Gabriella Zorzoli was on her heels with 26.
Brittany Ammons led the offensive attack with 16 kills, making each senior stand out on the stat sheet. Junior
Alyson Plyler and freshman
Mallory Church combined to anchor the Belhaven offense against the Majors, totaling 38 assists.
"We started off the match showing no teamwork, but we were able to get rid of our selfishness and play well as a team," Dee said. "Our seniors set the tone by their play, but our offense lacked any terminating power, which ultimately cost us the match."
Zorzoli picked up where she left off in the second match, chiming in a team best 15 digs, while Plyler followed with 10 of her own. Ammons and sophomore
Taylor Hall each had five kills apiece, while Plyler and Church added 11 assists each.
"Our girls played one of the best games of the year to end the season, but it wasn't enough against a superior UT Dallas group," Dee said. "They had a great offense, a tremendous setter, and were just flat out better."
Zorzoli, Owen, and Ammons competed in their final collegiate matches, and their head coach believes they will be deeply missed.
"I want to thank them for their dedication to this season," Dee said. "They have left a lasting legacy of what a Belhaven Blazer should be."
