Offensive Outburst Guides Blazers to First SSAC Victory

Box Score BRUNSWICK, Georgia – The Belhaven men's basketball (2-3, 1-1 SSAC) team picked up their first Southern States Athletic Conference victory Saturday night with a 79-68 defeat of the College of Coastal Georgia (5-2, 1-1 SSAC). A day after a loss to Brewton-Parker, the Blazers were able to salvage a split in their first SSAC road trip of the young season.

"I'm really proud of how our seniors took ownership of the team and came together to get a conference win on the road," Head Coach John Aiken said. "I could go on and on about how each guy provided a spark in some way, but we had balance in a lot of areas tonight."

Belhaven finished the night with four players in double figures, highlighted by a pair of upperclassmen. Junior Jordan Bedford and senior Chris Cofield tallied 15 points apiece, tied with Coastal Georgia's Kentorey Johnson for a game-high. Brandon Greene and Deon Bedford added 13 and 10 respectively for the Blazers, while PJ Reason and Reggie Burke added 10 each for the Mariners.

Each squad finished with 42 rebounds, while Cofield, Greene, and Mariner forward Chris Orr pulled down eight apiece. Belhaven lost the turnover battle 13-10 but made up for it by shooting 53% from the field.

Coastal Georgia countered with a mark of just 35% from the floor but did manage to finish with a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. The Blazers were able to post a 12 for 19 night at the charity stripe, their best percentage of the season.

Belhaven will have six days off before returning to conference action on November 22 against Auburn University of Montgomery. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Rugg Arena.

"We are one of only four teams from the SSAC's Western Division to earn a road win this weekend," Aiken said. "We have a chance to build this momentum against AUM, and we are going to give it our best."
