Reinhardt Powers Past Blazers

Box Score WALESKA, Ga. – The Belhaven football team couldn't slow down one of the top rushing offenses in country Saturday, falling to 24th ranked Reinhardt University 49-17 on the road. The Eagles rushed for 472 yards and remain unbeaten in the Mid-South Conference West Division in their first season of competition. Belhaven heads back to Jackson next week still looking for their first divisional win.

Belhaven (2-5, 0-3 MSC) stayed close until late in the second quarter when Reinhardt (5-2, 3-0 MSC) started a string of five straight touchdowns. At that point the Eagles held a 14-10 advantage and built the lead out to 49-10 before a fourth quarter score by the Blazers resulted in Saturday's final tally.

Reinhardt put the game's first touchdown on the board with 10:02 in the first quarter on an eight yard pass from Ryan Thompson to Aaron Kennedy. The score capped a 12 play 68 yard drive for the Eagles offense and was the highlight of the day for the passing attack. The ground game took over from that point forward.

The Blazers notched their first points on a field goal from reigning MSC Special Teams Player of the Week Alonso Acosta. Acosta hit four field goals last week at Bluefield and his 22 yarder Saturday brought Belhaven to within four points at 7-3 with 8:45 on the second quarter clock.

Unfortunately, the 16 play 75 yard drive didn't culminate in six points, stalling at the five yard line. The Belhaven offense produced 480 yards of offense and moved the ball well, but was unable to cap the drives with points consistently.

Reinhardt answered the triple by Acosta just over two minutes later when Niagel Curtis ripped off a 41 yard touchdown run to make it 14-3. Curtis went on to finish the game with 110 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. He was one of two 100 plus yard runners for the Eagles on the afternoon.

Belhaven was able to counter with just under five minutes to play in the half, slicing the deficit to 14-10. Wide Receiver Deuce Coon picked up a fumble from running back Aaron Spikes and turned what could have disastrous play into a touchdown. It would be the first of two touchdowns for Coon on the afternoon although the majority of his production came in the receiving department. Coon had seven catches for 118 yards and another TD.

The Eagles then began their string of five straight touchdowns to take control of the game. LJ Stegall reeled off a 32 yard run with 3:38 to play in half and then right before the break, Jaylen Dodd carried the ball to the house on an eight yard score. In the third quarter, Travis Nunley bumped the Reinhardt lead to 35-10 on a 92 yard interception return for a TD. Stegall found the end zone again on a 53 yard run and Haynes capped the day with an 81 yard run for six points.

Belhaven's final score came with 9:04 to go in the fourth quarter on a 22 yard pass from Ian McGinnis. McGinnis entered the game in the second half and had a solid outing, completing eight passes for 82 yards a score. It was his first action at quarterback since week two of the season at Louisiana College.

Darrell Williams started the game at quarterback for Belhaven, completing 15 passes for 187 yards. He also had 26 yards rushing, but had a pair of interceptions. Spikes paced the Blazers ground game with 54 yards on 12 carries. Defensively, Chris Smith had seven tackles for the Blazers, including one for a loss.

Stegall ended the day with 124 yards on the ground to lead all rushers. His stat totals included a pair of touchdowns. Curtis wasn't far behind with 110 yards and the Eagles nearly had another running back over the century mark. Haynes just missed the mark with 93 yards on the ground. Thompson completed 10 passes for 101 yards and Kennedy proved to be his favorite target, catching three passes for 35 yards and a score. With the addition of the passing yardage, the Eagles ended the contest with 573 total yards.

Blake Barnes and Jarred Johnson each had seven tackles for the Reinhardt defense.

Belhaven will host Lindsey Wilson College next Saturday in the annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 PM.
