Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven volleyball team (8-17, 2-10 SSAC) fell in four sets on Monday night to Loyola (7-16, 5-7 SSAC) by final set scores of 21-25, 25-9, 18-25, 16-25 in Southern States Athletic Conference play. The match was moved from Rugg Arena to the Hangar Dome at Millsaps College.
"At the beginning, I didn't think we had the intensity of a true home match," Head Coach
Justin Dee said. "We were able to adjust, though, and despite the loss, I have no issue with the way we played tonight."
Jackie Gunderson led the Blazers in kills with 11, while
Brittany Ammons and
Taylor Hall followed with eight apiece. Setter
Alyson Plyler finished with 30 assists, eight shy of Wolfpack counterpart Daniel Leal. Loyola's Eva Allen led all players with 13 kills, while teammates Kaitlin Mohr and Sabrina Stansberry powered in 11 and 10 respectively.
Defensively for Belhaven,
Gabriella Zorzoli tallied an impressive 28 digs, one of four Blazers in double digits. Becca Burnett led the visiting Wolfpack with 17, while Allen contributed 13 of her own.
The Blazers need to win their final two Southern States Athletic Conference matches to qualify for the SSAC Tournament. In order to accomplish that feat, those victories will have to come as upsets against the top two teams in the conference standings.
"We aren't going to beat Spring Hill and Mobile with free balls and mental mistakes," Dee said. "We need some breaks to go our way and we will have to play our best, too."
Belhaven is scheduled to host the University of Mobile in another SSAC contest next week. Fans can get the latest schedule updates at blazers.belhaven.edu.
