Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – Belhaven's volleyball team (5-14, 0-7) fell 3-1 against Loyola (4-13, 2-4) on Tuesday with final set scores of 10-25, 16-25, 25-23, and 20-25.
"Loyola came out, swung away, and really beat us up early. We looked like we were ready to throw in the towel," Head Coach
Justin Dee said. "I asked the girls to adjust and fight, and we were on fire after that."
Sophomore
Taylor Hall finished the match as Belhaven's leader in kills with eight, while
Chae Levy and
Brittany Ammons combined for 13 more. Loyola's Eva Allen led all players with 16, while Becca Burnett posted 21 digs on the defensive side.
Defensively for the Blazers,
Katherine Owen led with 11 digs, while
Abbigayl Herman added 10 of her own. As the evening progressed, however, it became unquestionably more memorable for another Blazer defender.
Senior defensive specialist and team captain
Gabriella Zorzoli entered the evening needing just three digs to break Michelle Goessl's school record of 1,346. With
Alyson Plyler unable to play, the Germantown, Tennessee native filled the shoes of her roommate.
"I was just ready to do whatever the team needed me to do, and tonight, that was setting," Zorzoli said. "I'm thankful to have the opportunity to play with these girls."
On a night in which she was asked to play offense primarily and potentially wait yet another night to break the record, Zorzoli led the Blazers in assists with 18. She also managed to tally six digs, surpassing the previous record by three.
"Gabe is incredibly talented and is a key component of this team," Dee said. "She is a leader on and off the court, and her heart for her team was shown by giving up the libero jersey tonight."
The Blazers return to action on Friday, when they will host first-year Southern States Athletic Conference member Martin Methodist College. The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm at Rugg Arena.
