JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven men's basketball team drilled a school record 16 three point shots Thursday night en route to a key 90-69 Southern States Athletic Conference victory over Spring Hill College in Rugg Arena. The previous record stood at 15 long range jumpers, set on March 5th, 2008 in an 86-82 loss at LSU-Shreveport in the second round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament.
Belhaven (8-10, 5-2 SSAC) trailed 2-0 after the first minute of play, but that quickly changed on the first triple of the night by senior
Jordan Butts to make it a 3-2 contest at the 18:38 mark. Butts would fire in five more three's before the night was over leading to a career high 30 points. The Blazers would build a 7-3 edge on a layup by junior
Luke Rogers before Spring Hill (3-15, 2-5 SSAC) stormed back with a 7-0 run to recapture a 10-7 advantage with 16:19 to play in the opening period.
However, what followed was a 10-0 scoring burst by Belhaven the changed the complexion of the game. Butts got things rolling with a layup followed by another three point bucket. Not to be outdone, sophomore
Jerrial Dawson rang up the first of a recording tying seven triples to make it a 15-10 Blazers lead. Butts capped the run on a dunk with 12:16 to play in the half and Belhaven never trailed the rest of the night.
With 5:15 to go in the first half, Belhaven had its first double digit lead of the night at 33-22, the result of a three point basket by junior
Chris Cofield. The Blazers would lead by as many as 14 points before the break, but settled for a 45-34 cushion when the halftime buzzer sounded.
Belhaven opened the second half on a dunk by sophomore
Datodrick Pinkston to extend the lead to 47-34. The Badgers tried one last time to get back in the contest on a quick 7-2 run, trimming the deficit to 49-41 with 18:51 to play. The Blazers fittingly answered with a triple by Dawson pushing the advantage back to double digits at 52-41 with 16:58 to go. The rest was history as Belhaven pulled away for the 21 point victory.
Butts led all scorers with his career high 30 points, going 10 of 16 from the field and 6 of 8 from three point range. Butts also had eight assists and four rebounds. Dawson followed Butts with 23 points and tied the school record for most threes in a game with seven. All of his shots were from behind the arc, finishing the night 7 of 13. Dawson shares the school record with Greg Harris, Kirt Arceneaux, and Julien Marion. Harris set the benchmark with seven three's on January 31st 1987.
The Blazers had two players record double doubles with Cofield scoring 12 points while grabbing a game high 11 rebounds. Pinkston followed with 11 points and 10 boards. Cofield just missed a triple double with eight assists.
Belhaven finished the game shooting 28 of 59 from the field (47.5%) and 16 of 28 from three point land (57.1%). The Blazers also attempted 30 free throws, converting 18 of them (60%). Belhaven also took care of the basketball limiting the turnovers to 15 while dishing out 24 assists.
Spring Hill was led by Robert Drummond with 21 points and eight rebounds. Alex Looney chipped in 16 points and had seven rebounds while Robert Gipson finished the contest with 14 points and seven rebounds. The Badgers were 21 of 56 shooting from the field (37.5%) and 5 of 25 from three point range (20%). Spring Hill owned a slight 42-40 edge in rebounding. However, 20 turnovers led to 29 Belhaven points on the offensive end of the floor.
The Blazers find themselves in third place in the SSAC West Division as they head into their next game against non-conference foe Freed-Hardeman University on Saturday. Belhaven lost the first meeting of the season between the two schools back on November 3rd 83-63. Saturday's tip-off is slated for 4:00 PM.
