Blazers Dial up 3-0 Victory against Coastal Georgia

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven volleyball team continued its winning ways on Saturday, defeating the Mariners of Coastal Georgia in front of a home crowd at Rugg Arena. The Blazers rolled to their second straight 3-0 match and completed a perfect record on the week in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

Belhaven (14-3, 6-1 SSAC) started where they left off against Brewton-Parker just one night previous, jumping out to an early lead in the first set. The Blazers looked to set the tone of the match early by taking a 25-12 win and the Mariners could not counter with any rallies of their own.

Coastal Georgia (8-11, 2-3 SSAC) regrouped in the second set, going back and forth with the Blazers on every point. Belhaven (14-3) wasn't able to connect a string of points together to put Coastal Georgia (8-11) away in the second set.

Belhaven managed to grab a set point opportunity, but the Mariners fought them off to take a set point of their own. Coach Jordan Lay called a 20 second timeout to refocus the troops and the Blazers rattled off three straight points following the timeout to take the second set 28-26.

With a comfortable 2-0 match lead, the Blazers hoped to avoid the struggles that plagued them in the third and fourth sets versus Loyola, when they dropped those two before winning the fifth set.

Coastal Georgia stayed with the Blazers once again and forced Belhaven into multiple errors that kept them from getting into a rhythm. However, the senior leadership that has been so steady for them all season long found a way to pull out another conference win.

The Blazers won the third and final set 26-24 to pull out their ninth 3-0 win of 2012, which is already more than the team recorded over an entire season a year ago.

Belhaven was led on the offensive side by Taylor Williams and Erin Bradley. The tandem connected for 13 kills off of a Williams' swing. Bradley finished with 30 total assists on the afternoon.

Katherine Owen and Morgan Hofacker chipped in 15 and 14 digs respectively to pace the Blazer defense.

Belhaven looks to keep their four game winning streak alive as Centenary College is the next opponent to travel to Rugg Arena during this six game home stand. The match begins at 7:00 PM on Tuesday evening.
