JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven volleyball team continued its winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Southern States Athletic Conference foe Brewton-Parker on Friday night. It was the third straight victory for the Blazers who are in the middle of their third winning streak of at least three games this season.
Three days removed from an exhausting five set win over rival Loyola, the Blazers were hoping to clean up some of the mistakes that prolonged Tuesday's match. Belhaven was able to do exactly that against Brewton-Parker, playing well in every facet of the game to roll to an early lead.
The Blazers found a consistency in the serving game that at times has been shaky in 2012, giving them a commanding lead in the first set. With the services rolling, the rest of the game fell into place for Belhaven.
Erin Bradley, the senior captain, was consistently putting her teammates in the best position to finish balls at the net, as has been the case throughout her four year career.
Taylor Williams and
Natalie Davis alternated at attacking the Baron's defense. Each was able to record multiple kills to start the match.
The first set finished with Belhaven on top 25-12, taking the early 1-0 match lead.
Belhaven (13-3, 5-1 SSAC) continued the dominant play at the net in the second set and the Barons were forced to find an answer on defense. No answer was found as the Blazers played one of their most consistent sets of the year with another 25-12 set victory to put Brewton-Parker in a 0-2 hole.
Bradley served the Blazers to an 8-0 lead in the third set and the team never looked back on the way to 25-14 final set victory.
Williams and Davis picked up nine kills apiece to lead the Blazers on the attack. On the front end of those kills was Bradley who stuffed the stat sheet with 36 assists in three sets. That total keeps her well on pace to pass the school record in assists by the end of the season.
Morgan Hofacker had another efficient performance with seven kills and nine digs. Leading the Blazers in digs was
Gabriella Zorzoli with 26 on the night.
The win improves the Blazers to 13-3 on the year and 5-1 in conference. Brewton-Parker falls to 4-7 on the year with a 1-4 SSAC record.
Belhaven is back on its home court Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM to take on the College of Coastal Georgia.
