Blazers Sweep Tougaloo in Three Sets

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – Powered by a strong night from Taylor Williams, the Belhaven Volleyball team cruised past Tougaloo College 3-0 Tuesday evening. The Blazers out-muscled the Bulldogs for much of the night in front of a large crowd at the Kroger Gymnasium on the Tougaloo campus.

The Bulldogs attempted to set the tone early, jumping out to an early lead in the first set. The first set has been a thorn in the side for the Blazers this season, coming out of the gate slow at times and allowing opponents to dictate the pace of the match.

Tougaloo (7-5) senior Dayane Souza blitzed the Blazers early with some beautiful serves and well-placed attacks, keeping Belhaven on their heels. The balanced play by the Bulldogs seemed to surprise the Blazers, but they quickly settled into a pace that was more suited to them.

The Blazers won the first set 25-21, pulling away from the Bulldogs after trading point for point for much of the set.

In the second set, the Blazers were able to settle into a groove and take a commanding grasp of the match. Bradley served to begin the set, putting up a 5-0 start that the Bulldogs weren't able to recover from. Belhaven (10-2) took the second set 25-18.

With momentum fully in their favor, the Blazers played their best set of the night in the third and final set. The errors seen in the previous two sets were reduced and they sailed past Tougaloo with a 25-11 clinching win.

During the times of adversity the team has looked to the leadership of their four seniors to get the team back on track. Tuesday night was no different, as the play of Williams and her setter Erin Bradley turned the tide of the match.

Williams connected on 21 passes from Bradley for an individual season high 21 kills in a single match. The attacks from Williams chipped away at whatever momentum the Bulldogs had initially and left them searching for ways to stop her.

“I thought the whole team played really well tonight,” Williams said following the Blazers fifth straight win.

When asked about her personal performance, Williams had this to say. “I think I played well. I made a few errors that I need to correct, but that will get figured out.”

The senior outside hitter wasn't the only player to be a part of the Belhaven offensive attack. Natalie Davis added eight kills of her own and freshman Morgan Hofacker had another impressive performance with six kills and 12 digs.

Bradley was usually on the other end of those kills, continuing her torrid pace with 37 assists. She now has 398 assists on the season. Gabriella Zorzoli finished second on the team with 13 digs and split time as the libero with Katherine Owen.

Owen made her second appearance of the season after missing ten the first eleven matches due to injury. Her steady presence in the middle of the defense led to a team high 14 digs on the night.

Belhaven gets a two day break before traveling over to Mobile, Alabama for a weekend doubleheader with Spring Hill and Mobile in Southern States Athletic Conference play. The first serve against Spring Hill on Friday is slated for 7:00 PM.
