Blazers Stumble against Mobile

JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven softball team took two losses Friday against Southern States Athletic Conference opponent the University. The Blazers dropped game one 5-4 and fell in game two with the final score 7-6. Belhaven, currently receiving votes in the latest Top 25 Coach's Poll, now hold a season record of 22-15 and 8-7 in SSAC play.

Game One

Mobile got things going early scoring two runs in the top of the 1st off the bat of Milagros Lozada who singled to bring home Brittany Dunson. The Rams next run came from a Blazer error allowing an unearned run from Lozada. The Blazers managed to even the score up at two all in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Katie Sanders got a single in the bottom of the second to allow CeCee Austin to score. In the bottom of the third, Courtney Fairley singled to right rounding in Taylor Bryan for the run evening the score at two all.

The Blazers seized the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Lizzy Hess scored an unearned run courtesy of a wild pitch. Courtney Fairley then gave the Blazers a 4-2 advantage from a fielder's choice play. Mobile closed the game out with three runs taking advantage of a few key errors by the Blazers allowing two Rams runs. Mary Beth Baker scored the go ahead run from a SAC fly closing the game out 5-4 in the Rams favor.

Designated player Taylor Bryan and centerfielder Lizzy Hess both had a hit and a run scored in Friday's contest. Shortstop Courtney Fairley led the Blazers in hits with two while crossing the plate once. Jessica Paris was served with the loss, allowing seven hits and five runs. Brittany Dunson led the Rams with two hits along with two runs. Milagros Lozada followed Dunson with a hit and a run along with two RBIs. Alli Hall got the win for the Rams pitching all seven innings giving up five hits and four runs.

Game Two

Mobile kept their momentum into game two scoring two runs placing themselves ahead early, 2-0. Belhaven quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Jordan Adams evening the game at 2-2. Mobile didn't was any time scoring two more runs in the top of the third on a homerun by Korie Fontenot.

The Rams tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth on a walk run from the Blazers and a single by Lozada rounding in two runs giving the Rams 7-2 advantage. The Blazers made a big push in the bottom of the 5th and 6th inning scoring two runs in both innings. The comeback wouldn't be enough as the Blazers couldn't muster up one last run as the Rams claimed a 7-6 win.

Four Blazers all managed two hits apiece Lizzy Hess, CeCee Austin, Jordan Adams and Chelsea Randle. Three Blazers grabbed two RBIs apiece with Austin, Adams and Emily Tucker driving them in.
Austin and Tucker both slammed homeruns in the contest. Three Blazer pitchers worked in the game as Samantha Massoth, Shelby Watson and Bayleigh Babin all logged innings. Watson received the loss giving up seven hits and five runs.

Milagros Lozada led the Rams with three hits and two RBIs. Four Ram players got two hits apiece; Barnes, Dunson, Rogers, and Fontenot. Brittany Kerr received the win in the circle from nine hits and five runs.

Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on William Carey in a doubleheader beginning at 1pm at Jim McLeod Field.
