Results vs. Mobile Results vs. WCU
MONTGOMERY, AL- The Belhaven Men's Tennis team opened the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday by winning the first match 5-0 against the University of Mobile, but fell in the second 5-0 against William Carey. The Blazers who are ranked 15th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, still have a shot at an at-large bid in the national tournament.
Match One vs. Mobile:
In the singles competition, only
Jefferson Nino and
David Mejia played their entire match, winning in two sets respectively 6-4, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2. Nino defeated Enzo Correa while
David Mejia took on Guilherme Aracaro. Other Blazers
Nicolas Osorio,
Gabriel Prado,
Daniel Duarte, and
Daniel Prado did not finish their contests.
In the double matches, the Blazers swept the Rams 3-0. Osorio/G. Prado defeated Paiva/Stonis 8-6. Nino/Duarte took on Aracaro/Tristao 8-2, while Mejia/D. Prado defeated Correa/Musgrove.
Match Two vs. William Carey:
In the second match of the day, the Blazers were defeated by William Carey 5-0. In the singles competitions, #6 Jody Claasen defeated Belhaven's
Nicolas Osorio in two sets 6-1, 6-1. Senior
Gabriel Prado was defeated by #22 Ricky Keppeler in two sets 6-1, 6-0.
In the double matches, the Crusaders swept Belhaven 3-0. Rizk/Claasen took on Osorio/G. Prado 8-1. Visser/Keppeler defeated Nino/Duarte 8-3, while Mejia/D. Prado lost against Semal/Ribalta 8-5.
The Blazers (15-3, SSAC 3-1) will now await word on a possible at-large berth into the NAIA National Tournament with the tournament field scheduled to be announced soon. The tournament will take place in Mobile, AL May 15-19th.
