MOBILE, Al.- The Belhaven softball team went 1-1 on Saturday against Southern States Athletic Conference opponent Spring Hill College in Mobile. The Blazers dropped the first game by the final score of 3-1, but managed to take game two 5-1. The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, are in an unfamiliar position with one double header remaining finding themselves in a must win situation to make it back to the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament in Columbus, GA beginning April 26th.
Game One
Belhaven (23-20, 9-12 SSAC) gave up its first run to Spring Hill in the bottom of the second as the Badgers took an early 1-0 advantage. Spring Hill continued their good play in the bottom of the fourth inning, adding a pair of runs to their lead placing them out in front of the Blazers 3-0. The runs were courtesy of two consecutive hits; a single from second baseman Melanie Alterio with the next hit coming off the bat of designated player Kayla Moran.
Third baseman
Annalee Carr produced an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Blazers on the scoreboard making it a 3-1 contest. However, Carr's hit would be the Blazers last highlight as the Badgers held on for the 3-1 win.
Designated player
Taylor Bryan led the Blazers collecting two hits while scoring one run.
Lizzy Hess was also credited with two hits while
Annalee Carr had one hit along with the Blazers only RBI in the contest.
Bayleigh Babin received the loss, logging 3.2 innings of work giving up six hits and three runs.
The Badgers relied on Melanie Alterio who served out two hits along with two RBIs. Shea Blanchard was the other hit leader for the Badgers with two. Linsey Dickerson gained the win pitching every inning with six hits allowed and one run.
Game Two
The second contest would prove to be a better game for the Blazers thanks to a huge third inning that produced all five runs.
Jordan Adams plated first scoring on a wild pitch by pitcher Kathryn Ingles giving the Blazers some early breathing room at 1-0.
CeCee Austin had what amounted to the winning hit in the game as she stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam homerun over the left field fence to make it 5-1.
Spring Hill (17-21, 7-9 SSAC) tallied their only run in the bottom of the second from a SAC fly. The Blazers big third inning capped the game as neither team generated any more runs as the Blazers took home a 5-1 victory.
First baseman
CeCee Austin led the Blazers with one hit, one run and a team best four RBIs. Three other Blazers all recorded a hit apiece in the contest as
Taylor Bryan,
Katie Sanders, and
Jordan Adams all reached base safely.
Jessica Paris got the start in the circle for the Blazers and was credited the win bringing her win-loss record to 8-8.
Mariha Partman had three hits for the Badgers while Jade Bourgeois got two hits and Katelyn Hinson had the only RBI in the game for Spring Hill. Kathryn Ingles was served with the loss, giving up four hits and five runs.
Belhaven will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Hattiesburg, MS to take on #7 William Carey University in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 PM.
