ALCORN STATE, Miss.-The Belhaven softball team grabbed a 3-0 non-conference victory at NCAA Division I Alcorn State University on Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, scored all three of their runs in the top of the fifth inning leading to the win.
Belhaven (18-10) had another strong outing from starting pitcher
Jessica Paris who tossed her sixth complete game and third shutout of the season. Paris allowed only five hits, struck out four and walked two en route a 7-3 record in the circle this season.
The Blazers offense gave Paris all the runs she needed in the fifth inning, scoring three times off Melissa Rubio. Paris helped her own cause by delivering a bases loaded RBI single plating pinch runner
Emily Tucker to make it a 1-0 game. Tucker had come into the game to pinch run for Ashley Hitt who had started the inning with a base hit. Right fielder
Joyce Smith followed the Paris single with a sacrifice fly to center field that rounded in catcher
Katie Sanders. Center fielder
Lizzy Hess extended the Belhaven lead to 3-0 by driving in
Taylor Bryan on a ground out to second base.
Belhaven ended the afternoon with four hits by four different hitters in the lineup. Smith had one of the hits and an RBI, Paris had a hit and an RBI, followed by shortstop Counrtney Fairley and Hitt with the other two singles in the contest.
Alcorn State (6-22) was led by Bianca Armstrong who went 2 for 3 at the dish. Center fielder Chqueta Givens had a hit in two plate appearances and catcher Che Dahlbeck went one for two. Rubio pitched five innings in the circle and was charged with three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Next up for the Blazers is a seven game Southern States Athletic Conference Crossover Tournament in Columbus, GA this Thursday through Saturday. The Blazers start the tournament off against Lee University on Thursday at 3:00 PM.
