Blazers Sweep Doubleheader at Truett-McConnell

JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven baseball team swept a key Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader at Truett-McConnell on Saturday afternoon to win the series two games to one. The Blazers, ranked 15th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, took game one 7-3 and captured an 8-3 win in the second contest.

Allen Johnson started the first game for the Blazers and came away with the victory as he fired six innings allowing two runs on eight hits with only one run being earned. Johnson struck out five and did not walk a batter on his way to the win. Nick Meekins was credited with the save after inheriting a bases loaded jam with no one out in the seventh. Meekins induced a double play ball and struck out the final hitter to seal the victory.

Belhaven was led at the plate in game one by outfielder Joshua Bouldin who went 1 for 3 with a two run home run. Jason Hicks was 2 for 4 at the dish followed by Anthony Doss, Bud Britt, Jamie Bruno, and Tom Wertz who each had one hit apiece. Wertz picked up two RBI's while Doss was credited with one run batted in. Britt and Bruno each had a double and scored a run.

In game two, Brett Blaise started and went the first four plus innings before giving way to Jon Patino who tossed the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings for the win. Patino did not allow a run and limited the Bears to just three hits. Patino struck out one and walked one as his record improves to 4-0 this season. Josh Clarke was called upon to close out the game in the ninth and blanked Truett-McConnell on the strength of two strikeouts.

Five Blazer batters had multi-hit games led by Hicks and Britt who were 2 for 4 with a home run each. Hicks also had a double along with Doss who was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Wertz grabbed a pair of hits and an RBI while Bonds was 2 for 3 with a sacrifice bunt. Ryne Cook ended the afternoon with a hit and two runs batted in.
