Jackson State University Sweeps Blazers Tuesday Afternoon

JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven softball team dropped a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon to NCAA Division I Jackson State University losing 8-3 in the first contest and 5-3 in game two.

Game One
Jackson State got the bats going early taking a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Amanda Vasquez got a single allowing Ariel Siegel to score giving the Tigers first run of the contest. Sabeana Romero then stepped up to the plate and drilled an RBI double bringing in Vasquez for the run. JSU got their last run of the inning on a bases loaded walk by Shelby Watson. The Blazers got out of the inning on a groundout by Jasmine Warren to third base.

Jackson State kept their momentum going into the top of the third inning, tacking on two more runs. Vasquez and Romero scored on an illegal pitch from Blazer pitcher Jessica Paris, pushing the Tiger lead out to 5-0. The Blazers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third when Annalee Carr singled up the middle driving in Courtney Fairly for the Blazers cutting the deficit to 5-1.

Wendi Reed slammed a homerun for the Tigers brining in Tayler Nave for the score extending JSU's lead to 7-1. Belhaven managed their second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice popup by Jordan Adams allowing Shelby Watson to score making it a 7-2 contest. Both teams gained a run in the 6th inning with neither team scoring in the seventh as the Tigers claimed the 8-3 victory.

Belhaven had six players with a hit apiece in Carr, Austin, Fairly, Watson, Hitt, and Paris. Carr, Jordan and Adams all claimed an RBI in the contest. Shelby Watson pitched two innings allowing five runs on four hits dropping her season record 1-1. Jessica Paris fired five innings allowing three runs on three hits.

Talar Nave and Sabeana Romero led the Tigers with two hit apiece while Felcia Wilson and Wendi Reed got two RBIs apiece. Jasmine Warren got the win for Jackson State in the circle giving up three runs off five hits.

Game Two
Jackson State kept their foot on the pedal in game two producing two runs in the top of the first inning. Tayler Nave homered to right center giving the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage. Wendi Reed then scored off a SAC fly from Vasquez giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. The Tigers tacked on another run in the top of the second when Tahlisa Blosser notched JSU's second homerun of the contest putting the Tigers 3-0.

The Blazers sent in their first run of the game in the third when Joyce Smith blasted her first homerun of the season making the score 3-1. Belhaven cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth when CeCee Austin hit a single to center. Jackson State responded with a double in the top of the 6th by Vasquez advancing Reed and Siegel to score putting the Tigers up 5-2. Belhaven managed a run in bottom of the 6th with a double from
Courtney Fairly making it 5-3, unfortunately the run would be the last of the contest as the Tigers posted a 5-3 win.

The Blazers pounded out six hits in the contest with CeCee Austin and Joyce Smith leading in the hit category with two hits each and one RBI apiece. Bayliegh Babin surrendered eight runs on five hits and was tagged with the loss in the contest.

Tayler Nave and Wendi Reed had two hits apiece for the Tigers while Amanda Vasquez chimed in with one hit and three RBIs in game two. Breea Jamerson pitched all seven innings for the Tigers allowing three runs on six hits en route to the win.

Belhaven will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting LSU-Alexandria in a double header. Game-time is set for 1:00 PM at Jim McLeod Field.
