CLEVELAND, GA.- The Belhaven men's basketball team snapped a four game losing skid Saturday afternoon, defeating Truett-McConnell College 90-78 in a Southern States Athletic Conference crossover contest. The Blazers never trailed in the game as the team put together one of its better overall performances of the season.
Belhaven (5-7, 3-1 SSAC) stepped out in front at the 17:55 mark on a pair of free throws by
Jordan Butts, but Truett-McConnell answered with a quick basket a few seconds later from Anthony Dorsey to tie the game at 2-2.
Chris Cofield notched the next bucket for the Blazers to make it a 4-2 game, but the Bears once again responded with a field goal of their own. This time the two pointer was credited to Jeff Young, tying the contest at 4-4 with 16:06 remaining in the first half.
It would prove to be the final tie of the night. Belhaven took the lead for good at 7-4 on a conventional three point play by
Datodrick Pinkston with 15:48 to go until intermission. The Blazers largest advantage grew to as many as 19 points in the first half with an eventual halftime lead of 46-29.
The Bears made the game close again late in the second half climbing back to within five points at 69-64 with 5:18 to play. However, the Blazers went on a quick 5-0 run with all the points coming from Pinkston. Truett-McConnell did not seriously threaten the rest of the way.
The Blazers had great balance with five players scoring in double figures.
Chris Cofield led the way with a season high 21 points followed by
Deon Bedford with 20 points. Pinkston had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Butts added 15 points and
Luke Rogers fired in a career high 15 points. Bedford also notched a double double with a team high 12 rebounds.
As a team, Belhaven knocked down 45.9 percent of its field goals (34-74) and dominated Truett-McConnell on the glass outrebounding the Bears 48-29.
Dorsey had a game high 29 points followed by Bradon Joiner with 24 points to lead the way for Truett-McConnell. Andretti Loyd chipped in 11 points and a team high eight rebounds to round out the double digit scorers. The Bears hit 42.2 percent of their field goals on the night (27-64).
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday December 14th in the Tougaloo College Classic against Talladega College. The tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
