COLUMBIA, Ky.- It was another rough afternoon for the Belhaven men's basketball team Saturday, falling to Campbellsville University (KY) 79-53 on day two of the Lindsey Wilson College Classic. The Blazers lost to the host Blue Raiders 90-57 on Friday night and struggled to find their footing offensively on Saturday against the Tigers.
Campbellsville (6-1) used the same three point formula that Lindsey Wilson employed Friday night to a build an early 6-0 lead. Filip Stanic opened the scoring on a triple at the 18:27 mark followed by the first of what would be four treys in the game for Justin Ennis with 16:07 left in the first half.
Belhaven (4-6) fought back and reeled off the games next seven points to take the lead with 14:21 to go until the break.
Jonathan Ratliff provided a spark off the bench and ignited the offense with three point bucket to start the run.
Jordan Butts converted the next two field goals to cap the burst and provide the 7-6 edge.
The game went back and forth over the next five minutes with the two teams exchanging the lead four times during that stretch. Butts gave Belhaven its final lead of the afternoon at 17-16 on a triple with just under nine minutes remaining in the opening 20 minutes. However, in a matter of three minutes the Blazers went from having a one point lead to facing a 12 point deficit. The Tigers buried a trio of three point baskets and added two more fields to take control of contest with a 13-0 run, resulting in a 34-22 lead. Campbellsville maintained a 40-28 advantage at halftime and kept the Blazers from getting any closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
“Campbellsville is probably the best defensive team we have played and they were really good today,” said Belhaven Head Coach John Aiken. “I thought we were good in spurts and outplayed them in the first half, but the way they shot the three's proved to be the difference. We are playing small so we will have to be better at forcing turnovers and taking advantage of our opponent's mistakes.”
Belhaven was led by Ratliff with 15 points off the bench followed by Butts with 14 points and a team high six rebounds.
Datodrick Pinkston and
Deon Bedford ended the afternoon with eight points each.
The Blazers were limited by a tough Campbellsville defense to 23 of 63 shooting from the field (36.5 percent). Belhaven went 5 of 15 from behind the arc (33.3 percent) and were 2 of 5 from the charity stripe.
On the other side of the court it was a different story where Campbellsville shot a blistering 56 percent from the field (28 of 50). The Tigers drilled 55.6 percent of their triples (10 of 18), including 7 for 10 in the first half to set the tone for the rest of the day. Campbellsville converted 13 of 16 attempts at the charity stripe.
Ennis led all scorers with 25 points off the bench followed by Malik Thomas with 16 points and six rebounds. Jordan Myers and Filip Stanic each dropped in nine points on the afternoon. Campbellsville won the battle of the boards 39-27 and 18 turnovers didn't factor into the outcome of the game.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday night when the team heads east to battle Emmanuel College (GA) in a Southern States Athletic Conference showdown followed by another SSAC contest at Truett-McConnell on Saturday.
“We have a week now to practice and get ready for the games next weekend,” added Aiken. “Despite the record this weekend I felt like we learned a lot about our team and hope to make adjustments off of what we learned.”
Friday's tip-off at Emmanuel is slated for 6:30 PM.
