JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven volleyball squad continued their dominance in SSAC conference play, rolling to their fourth straight 3-0 victory. Faulkner caught the Blazers by surprise in the first set, but they were unable to tally a set in the two teams' second and final meeting of the 2012 season.
The Eagles had proven tough the first time the two teams met on opening weekend and they looked ready from the outset on the slow-starting Blazers. Faulkner (5-11, 1-7 SSAC) came out connecting on every opportunity, while Belhaven (16-3, 7-1 SSAC) was searching for the rhythm they've had during their current win streak.
Faulkner never allowed Belhaven to gain any control over the match on their way to a set point. However a 24-22 Faulkner lead quickly unraveled as the Blazers rallied off four straight points to deny the Eagles of a first set victory.
With the momentum suddenly on their side, the Blazers turned up the heat on Faulkner and never trailed again in the match.
In the second set, Belhaven raced out to a big lead and Faulkner wasn't able to get back within four points before the Blazers won 25-19.
Morgan Hofacker had a number of big kills to turn back any thoughts of a Faulkner rally. She finished with a team leading 10 kills on the night.
The third set was the Blazers best of the night. They kept the Eagles guessing by working the ball from side to side on offense.
Taylor Williams had four kills in the final set to pace the team to a 25-18 victory.
Alyson Plyler and
Katherine Owen also contributed key digs on defense that had looked to be Faulkner points.
Erin Bradley finished with 28 assists on the night, with most of those passes going to Hofacker, Williams (9 kills) or
Natalie Davis (5 kills).
Davis had a season high five blocks in the match—three solo and two assists—to pace the Blazer defense at the net. Owen led the team on the back line with 20 digs.
The six wins in a row matches the season high set by the team earlier in the year.
Belhaven has their toughest test of the season as No. 6 Lee University comes into town for a noon start Saturday. Lee has only lost once in conference, to Spring Hill back on September 15. They also currently hold a winning streak of seven games.
