Blazers Grab Two More Wins in Millsaps Tourney

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Volleyball team completed a perfect weekend by defeating Rust College and University of Texas-Tyler on Saturday afternoon. The two straight-set victories brought the Blazers to 25-6 on the year, which matches the school record for wins in a season.

In the first matchup of the day, Belhaven ripped Rust College 3-0 for the second time this season. The two teams last met in September when Belhaven hosted an eight-team tournament to kick off their 2012 home schedule.

Rust was able to stay with the Blazers for the first half of the first set, but Belhaven ran away with the match after that.  The Blazers showcased the rhythm they'd found earlier in the week to keep a 15-set winning streak alive.

Belhaven defeated the Bearcats 25-14, 25-10, 25-7 to set up a matchup with UT-Tyler later in the afternoon.

The Blazers started quickly against the Patriots with Morgan Hofacker finishing three impressive points at the net to jumpstart the attack. The rest of the squad followed suit on their way to a 25-14 first set victory.

The Patriots began to catch up to the Blazers in the second set by putting together a few runs of their own. Trailing 13-5 in the second set, UT-Tyler rallied off seven straight points to force Belhaven into a quick timeout.

Belhaven rebounded from there and took the 2-0 lead with a 25-21 set victory.

The third set was the most competitive of the day for Belhaven, but they never let the Patriots get close enough for a scare. Every time it looked like the Blazers may be losing a bit of their momentum, they would pull away from UT-Tyler. Eventually they were able to gut out the 25-22 victory to record their 25th win of the year.

Erin Bradley added another 71 assists between the two matches and now needs only 159 to break the all-time career record in that category.

Belhaven will be in New Orleans, LA on Monday and Tuesday for contests against Xavier and Loyola. The Blazers will battle Xavier Monday night at 7:00 PM and will wrap up the regular season with a Southern States Athletic Conference match at Loyola Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
