Box Score vs LeTourneau Box Score vs. Huntingdon
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Volleyball team completed a near flawless opening day at the Millsaps Invitational on Friday. Belhaven beat both LeTourneau University and Huntingdon College by convincing 3-0 scores in each contest to improve to 23-6 on the season.
The Blazers kicked off the tournament with a matchup versus the LeTourneau Yellow Jackets. The Jackets have had a tough few weeks, losing 14 of their last 15 matches, coming into their contest with Belhaven.
Belhaven exploited the weaknesses in the LeTourneau defense from the first serve and looked like a team on a mission. There was a period in the first set where
Taylor Williams and
Natalie Davis finished six straight points to push the Blazers lead to an insurmountable one.
LeTourneau could never get their footing against an active Belhaven squad and the Blazers punished them for it. Belhaven was able to consistently find the Yellow Jackets out of position on their way to a 25-17, 25-15, 25-13 victory.
In the nightcap, the Hawks from Huntingdon College took their turn at attempting to knock Belhaven off their three game win streak.
However, the Blazers were too strong for the Division III program. Belhaven showed their muscle and volleyball awareness by racking up a 25-8, 25-7, 25-10 win. The Blazers never allowed the Hawks to put several points together for a comeback attempt and let the game come to them rather then forcing plays that weren't there.
Erin Bradley added 61 assists between the two games to push her extremely close to a thousand assists for the season. Bradley also added four service aces against Huntingdon. Splitting duties at setter in the second match was
Alyson Plyler, who recorded a season high nine assists.
Williams (20 kills), Davis (16 kills) and
Samantha O'Malley (16 kills) all had efficient nights on the offensive side. Every time you looked, one of the three seniors was putting away a point at the net.
Morgan Hofacker also had a good day with 14 kills and eight digs.
The dynamic defensive duo of
Katherine Owen and
Gabriella Zorzoli were at it again on Friday. Owen posted 19 digs on the day and Zorzoli wasn't far behind with 16 to pace the back end of the defense. O'Malley led the team with four solo blocks, which is her best effort of the season in that regard.
Belhaven will wrap up the two day tournament on Saturday with matches against Rust College and the University of Texas-Tyler. The first serve against Rust is slated for 12:00 PM.
