Blazers Topple Alcorn State on Senior Night

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a dominating 3-0 victory over the visiting Braves of NCAA Division I Alcorn State. The celebrated seniors were the story on Tuesday night, showcasing one of their most complete efforts of the season in front a raucous Belhaven crowd.

The first set started a bit slow for Belhaven, which was to be expected on a night full of emotion and remembrance. However, it didn't take long for the senior leadership to get the Blazers refocused on the task of getting a victory at home for the last time this season.

The Blazers pulled away from the Braves after an early tie to take the first set 25-14. Alcorn State wouldn't have an opportunity to put that many points on the board again during the match.

The second set was a blur, thanks in part to the serving by Natalie Davis. Davis served for 15 straight points to spur Belhaven to a quick 25-5 win for the 2-0 match lead. The five points were the least amount of points the Blazers have surrendered in any set this season.

With the pendulum swung fully in their favor, Belhaven (21-6) put the cap on the 3-0 victory by taking the third set 25-10.

Taylor Williams led the Blazers in kills, as she has for much of the season, with 12 on the night. Joining her on the offensive stat sheet was Davis who, aside from her whopping 19 serve attempts, had nine kills of her own. Both Davis and Williams contributed a solid .500 hitting percentage, which was a major factor in the victory.

Samantha O'Malley also had nine kills and tallied the only solo block of the night. O'Malley and Davis combined for another two blocks.

Erin Bradley posted another good night in front of her family with a 34 assist effort and lost only two points on 11 serves.

Defensively, the Blazers kept the Braves from putting any good rallies together. Gabriella Zorzoli led the back line in digs with 13, while four other players contributed at least five digs apiece.

Although their Rugg Arena appearances are done for 2012, the Blazers travel just down the street to Millsaps College for four matches starting Friday at noon. Belhaven will have the opportunity to tie the record for wins in a season if they have a perfect weekend.
