JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Volleyball team got back into the win column on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over non-conference foe Tougaloo College. Belhaven rebounded nicely from a tough loss against Spring Hill over the weekend and left little doubt as to which team would come out of the match victorious.
The Blazers raced out to a large lead early in the first set because of the connection between
Erin Bradley and
Natalie Davis. Bradley found Davis five times in the first set; four of them resulted in points for Belhaven. The timing between them would only get stronger as the match continued.
Tougaloo senior Dayane Souza attempted to keep the lead from becoming insurmountable, but her 13 kills on the night weren't enough to deter the Blazers from controlling the match.
“We knew that we could force Tougaloo to play at our pace,” said Head Coach Jordan Lay following the match. “It was just a matter of executing on each opportunity and we were able to do that tonight.”
Belhaven won the first set going away, 25-15, over the Lady Bulldogs.
The second set wasn't much different, but the Lady Bulldogs started to adjust to what Belhaven was doing on offense. However, the Belhaven defense led by Katie Owen and
Gabriella Zorzoli were there to snuff out any ideas Tougaloo had at a rally. Owen finished the night with 15 digs, while Zorzoli finished with 14 digs.
Taylor Williams had her best set of the night in the second with five of her thirteen kills in the match. Williams' play at the net propelled the Blazers to a 25-20 second set victory.
In the third set, Davis and Bradley got hot and shut the door on Tougaloo for the shutout. On three straight points in the middle of the set, Davis rocketed passes from Bradley straight into the belly of the Lady Bulldog's defense. Davis finished second on the team with 12 kills, but accomplished that with only 18 attempts for a .611 hitting percentage.
Belhaven completed the sweep with a 25-19 final set victory.
Bradley averaged 15 assists per game on the night, finishing with 45 assists. That total was her best three set effort of the season.
The Blazers close out their home matches in 2012, when Alcorn State comes to town Wednesday evening. The game will be the last time seniors Bradley, Williams, Davis and
Samantha O'Malley don Belhaven uniforms in Rugg Arena.
