JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven volleyball team won its fifth match in a row on Tuesday night by taking out Centenary College in straight sets. The Blazers left little doubt about the outcome of the match from the outset, out-hitting the Ladies in front of a packed Rugg Arena.
The Blazers have found the cure to their early season slow starts and have dictated the pace to the opposing team for much of the last month. Things weren't much different on Tuesday night as Belhaven peppered the Centenary (0-16) defense with high-flying kills in the first set.
Taylor Williams came out firing from the outside to finish multiple points at the net setting the tone for the Blazers. Her intensity at the net sparked the rest of the team and they raced out to huge lead before ultimately winning the set 25-11.
The Ladies rebounded in the second to challenge the Blazers. Point for point they matched Belhaven until the two teams were knotted at ten points apiece. It was then that the Blazers found their second gear, taking 15 of the final 21 points to take a two set lead.
In the final set, Belhaven continued to control the match and never allowed the Ladies to get within four points once they had built a substantial lead. They took the clinching set 25-14 to improve to 15-3 on the year.
Alyson Plyler and
Katherine Owen led the Blazer defense with nine digs each, while
Morgan Hofacker pitched in seven of her own.
Williams led the team in kills as she has for much of the season, recording ten kills. She is now 12 kills away from moving into third place on the Belhaven all-time kills list. Hofacker was second on the team with seven.
Erin Bradley distributed 24 assists evenly amongst the rest of the team as six of her teammates recorded a kill off of her passes.
Bradley (4 aces), Plyler (3 aces) and Hofacker (3 aces) all had solid nights at the serving stripe for the Blazers.
Belhaven sported pink shoelaces for the first time on Tuesday in support of October's Breast Cancer Awareness month, joining the Blazer women's soccer team in the campaign.
The Blazers look to continue their hot streak on Friday when Faulkner comes to town for a 7 p.m. start. The number six team in the country, Lee University, also travels to Jackson this weekend for a noon match on Saturday.
