CLEVELAND, Tenn.-The Belhaven men's basketball team fell at Lee University Saturday 89-78 in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup. The Blazers dug themselves an 11 point hole at the half and the Flames were nearly unstoppable from the field drilling nearly 72 percent of their field goals in the contest (33 of 46).
Belhaven scored the first three points of the game on a field goal and free throw by
Andrew Marshall with 19:17 left in the first half, resulting in the only lead of the night. Lee eventually tied the game with 18:12 on the clock thanks to a field goal from Patrick Shaughnessy off an assist by Brice Sharp. The Flames then grabbed the lead for good on another Shaughnessy basket with just over 17 minutes to go in the opening period. Lee's largest lead in the first half was 15 which occurred on three separate occasions.
Belhaven went toe to toe against the Flames in the second half and were able to match Lee point for point. However, the Blazers weren't able to slow down the Lee offense, which shot 77 percent from the field in the second half, in order to gain some ground. Belhaven managed to get within eight points twice with less than eight minutes to go at 63-55 and 65-57.Unfortuneatly, each time Lee countered with a key basket on the ensuing possession to keep the Blazers at bay.
Belhaven (6-11, 1-5 SSAC) had a huge game from junior forward
Andrew Marshall who produced a season high 25 points and added a game high 10 rebounds for his second double double of the season. Senior forward
Brittion Smith also had a solid effort pouring in 20 points with six rebounds and a team best three assists. Senior forward
Daryl Arnold tossed in 19 points to help carry the offense. As a team, Belhaven hit 46.3 percent of its field goals (30-65) and owned a rebounding advantage of 32-21. Twenty-one of those rebounds were on the offensive end of the floor which led to 18 second chance points.
Lee (9-3, 4-2 SSAC) had four players contribute at least 10 points in the game, led by Ryan Westbrooks with a game high 27 points. Tyrone Caldwell added 17 points followed by Steve Bennett and Duran Blue with 10 points apiece. Caldwell was the Flames leading rebounder with four and also led all players with nine assists. Lee's bench outscored Belhaven 58-24 in the game.
