Blazers Snatch Win From Spring Hill College

JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven men's basketball team ran its winning streak to six games with a Southern States Athletic Conference win over Spring Hill College Saturday afternoon in Rugg Arena 79-62. The Blazers expand their season win total to twelve and control first place in the SSAC West Division.

Spring Hill (10-8, SSAC 5-6) started the contest off hot with a 10-2 run with less than four minutes gone by in the first half. The Blazers then found themselves at a disadvantage, down eight with 10:45 left in the half. Belhaven then turned the tide in the game engineering a 12-2 run three minutes later to move in front by one point 24-23. Junior Terrance Stringfellow got a basket to extend the Blazer lead to seven with five minutes left to play in the half. The Badgers didn't go away easily, regrouping on a 10-5 run that closed the gap to 35-33 at halftime.

Belhaven saw its lead diminish early in the second half when Jake Thelen scored five consecutive points to put the Badgers back on top 42-41. With 9:47 in the contest, junior Andrew Marshall got a basket to put the Blazers back up by three, 50-47. Belhaven exploded offensively from that point forward and never relinquished the lead to the Badgers again in the contest. Senior Woodie Howard knocked down a pair of free throws with 7:08 left to go, expanding the cushion to thirteen. Senior Britton Smith then got a layup to put the Blazers out in front 16 points and Belhaven closed the game on a Daryl Arnold layup followed by a pair of free throws from Jordan Butts to the 79-62 win.

Belhaven (12-11, SSAC 7-5) distributed the scoring wealth with six players scoring 10 points or more. Smith led the way with 15 points and five rebounds followed by Howard with 14 points going, 6-7 from the charity stripe. Butts turned in 13 points with five assists while sophomore Chris Cofield had 12 points and five assists as well. Arnold tallied 11 points a team high six assists while sharing the rebound stat leader category with two other Blazers at seven. Junior Terrance Stringfellow and Andrew Marshall had seven boards and Marshall also contributed 10 points in the contest. Belhaven outscored their opponent in the second half by 15 points 44-29. Belhaven had a shooting percentage of 51.8 from the floor, draining 29 of 56 shots from the field. The Blazers also topped Spring Hill in the battle of the boards 40-30 while making their presence felt in the painted area outscoring the Badgers 42-36.

Spring Hill's Jake Thelen led all scorers with 22 points while hauling down 11 rebounds. Stephen Burches had 12 points with a team best five assists. Brett Williams had 10 points rounding out the double figure scorers for the Badgers. Spring Hill shot 40.7% from the floor while going 12-17 from the free throw line, 70.6%.

Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to University of Auburn-Montgomery for another SSAC battle. Belhaven won the first meeting of the season between the two teams on January 12th 81-70. Tip-off scheduled for 4:00 PM.
