JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven men's basketball continued to stay hot picking up its fourth straight win defeating Loyola University in Southern States Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon 89-82. The Blazers recorded their 10th win on the season and evened up their Southern States Athletic Conference record at the .500 mark 5-5.
Belhaven (10-11, SSAC 5-5) looked good in the first half of the contest shooting 64% from the floor. The Blazers took control of the half at the 8:36 mark when forward
Andrew Marshall dropped in a basket to give the Blazers an eight point advantage.
Daryl Arnold kept the momentum rolling with a steal and a big time jam bumping the Blazers to their largest lead of the first half at nine, 30-21. The Wolfpack chopped into the lead on a basket by Corey Gray making it a five point game. With 38 seconds left in the half,
Chris Cofield countered with a basket to put the Blazers up seven. The basket would close out the half as Belhaven took a 35-28 lead into the locker room.
The Blazers kept their momentum going into the second half, starting the final 20 minutes on a 13-8 run.
Andrew Marshall knocked down a jumper to give the Blazers a 15 point advantage with 13:03 left to go. Britton Smith got a lay in to give the Blazers their largest lead of the contest at 16, 61-45. Kyle Simmons sunk a triple for the Wolfpack cutting the Blazers edge to eight with 3:40 left to play. Loyola continued to stay close and with 17 seconds left, Steve Davis hit a basket shaving the lead down to six. However, Davis's basket wouldn't be enough as the Blazer hit 4 out of 5 from the charity stripe courtesy of

The Blazers had five players in double figures on Saturday and shot 57.1 % for the game with senior
Daryl Arnold leading the way with 21 points and four steals. Junior
Andrew Marshall and Senior
Woodie Howard both contributed 18 points apiece while Howard had a team best six rebounds. Sophomore
Chris Cofield turned in 12 points with a team high eight assists. Closing out the double digit scoring was junior
Jordan Butts with 10 points and six assists. The Blazers got out on the break outscoring the Wolfpack in fast break points 20-8. Belhaven also manage to edge Loyola on the broads snatching 31 rebounds to the Wolfpack's 29. The Blazers played unselfish basketball amassing 24 assists.
“I thought our guys played really well,” said Belhaven Head Coach Tom Kelsey. “One thing about Loyola is I knew they wouldn't quit, they are a well coached team and they are balanced with a nice perimeter and inside game. Our guys made some big plays down the stretch knocking in some free throws and we got good defense stops. To get our fourth straight win to start off Western conference play was big for us tonight.”
Loyola University was paced by Cameron Cates who had a game high 28 points and seven rebounds. Cates was followed by Chris Joseph with 18 points while Corey Gray tossed in 13 points. Loyola shot 48.3% from the field tonight and went 81.5% 22-27 from the charity stripe.
Belhaven will look to stay hot as they travel to Montgomery, AL to take on Faulkner University Thursday night. Tipoff is at 7:30 PM.
