Blazers Score a Victory over Tougaloo

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven volleyball team stayed unbeaten on the season thanks to a 3-0 win over cross town rival Tougaloo College Tuesday night in Rugg Arena. The Blazers took all three sets with final scores of 25-8, 25-15, and 25-9. Belhaven improves to 4-0 with the win while the Bulldogs drop to 0-1.

Belhaven pulled out to a 14-4 lead in the opening set and never looked back en route to the game one decision. In set number two, things were a little rocky early on as Tougaloo jumped out to a 4-2 lead. The Blazers then evened the set at 5-5 on a kill by Erinn Hampton and then Hampton stuck another kill to put Belhaven on top for good in set two. In the third and final set, Belhaven exploded for an 11-1 advantage and cruised to the set and match victory.

Hampton had a big night for Belhaven on the offensive end of the floor as she came up with a match high 10 kills. Leigh Anne Huddleston and Christina Atwood followed with six kills each and Samantha O'Malley totaled five kills. Erin Bradley picked up 18 more assists and Lauren Zell contributed a team high 12 digs in her first match of the season.

Clora Evans and Dayane Souza each had three kills for Tougaloo while Souza also led the defense with 14 digs.

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday at the Rhodes College Tournament in Memphis, TN. The Blazers will take on Hendrix College (AR) at 2:00 PM followed by a match with Sewanee University (TN) at 6:00 PM. On Saturday, Belhaven meets up with Millsaps at 1:00 PM and then will play the host school Rhodes at 5:00 PM to wrap up the tournament.
