Jackson, MS- The Belhaven volleyball team notched a win against cross-town rival Millsaps College Tuesday Night 3-1. The final set scores were, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-20. After dropping the first set, the Blazers gained their composure and increased their season record to 13-4 and 3-2 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
Belhaven (13-4, SSAC 3-2) started the contest off slow dropping the first set 19-25. In set two, the Blazers were able to get on track winning the set 25-22 tying the match play up at a set a piece. The Blazers kept their momentum in set three winning 25-21 giving the Blazers a 2-1 lead. In set number four, the Blazers and Majors battled each other tough but the Blazers pulled out the set 25-20 and gained their 13th win of the season. Belhaven jumped out to an 18-10 lead only to see Millsaps rally with seven straight points to get back in it. However, the Blazers regrouped and put the match away.
Christina Atwood led the Blazers in kills with 18 while rallying a .441 attack percentage.
Taylor Williams followed Atwood in kills with 16 and also contributed 18 digs.
Erin Bradley claimed 45 assists and 25 digs while
Katherine Owen had a team high 29 digs. As a team, the Blazers swatted 10 blocks, posted 52 assists and 54 kills.
Maggie Tumminello led the Majors in kills with 14 kills and Raven Scott followed with 11. Leanne Gilder had a team high 28 digs while Taylor Zeigler and Scott each had 24 assists. As a team, the Majors claimed five blocks and 58 kills.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday September 30th as they travel to Lee University to take on Shorter University in Southern States Athletic Conference play. Game-time is slated for 3:00 PM. Belhaven will then take on Lee University at 10:00 AM followed by Brewton-Parker College at 2:00 PM on Saturday in SSAC play from Lee University.
