Mobile, AL-The Belhaven volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a key 3-2 Southern States Athletic Conference victory at the University of Mobile Tuesday night. The final set scores were 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 26-24, and 15-12. In fact, the Blazers last two wins have come after they found themselves trailing 2-0. Belhaven fell behind against Emmanuel this past Saturday and fought back for a 3-2 victory in that contest.
Belhaven (11-3, 3-1 SSAC) took a while to get going Tuesday night as the offense struggled in the first two games. The Blazers hit at .036 and .097 in the first two sets of the night leading to losses in both of them. In game one, the score was tied at 18-18 until Mobile ended the game with a 7-3 run. Mobile (6-7, 1-3 SSAC) set the tone early in game two busting out of the gate with a 5-0 advantage. The Blazers were able to close the gap to 20-18, but once again a late 5-2 surge by the Rams ended the set.
Belhaven then caught fire in the third game and the offense picked things up leading to their best attack percentage of the night at .375. The Blazers built an 18-11 lead following a block by
Christina Atwood and
Serita Ingram and ended the set to keep the match alive thanks to a kill by
Taylor Williams. In game four, Belhaven once again established an edge at 6-3 and eventually held a three point lead at 23-20 needing just two points to force a fifth and deciding game. However, Mobile scored the next four points and led 24-23 setting themselves up for a potential match victory on the next point. The Blazers had a different plan and landed three straight points to win the game. The Rams hurt themselves with two attack errors and a kill by
Leigh Anne Huddleston accounted for the other point in the stretch.
Belhaven had to once again rally in the fifth game as Mobile took an early 5-1 lead. The Blazers earned the next three points to pull to with one at 5-4. The Rams took three more consecutive scores and pushed their lead to 8-4. Belhaven then took control with an 11-4 run to clinch the match. With the game tied at 12-12,
Taylor Williams and
Natalie Davis posted back to back kills and then the final point came on a set error by Mobile giving Belhaven the road victory.
Taylor Williams had one of her best matches of the season slamming a team best 18 kills while turning in an attack percentage of .333. She also had 12 digs on the defensive side of the net. Williams has played extremely well in her last three matches registering 59 kills and 41 digs.
Christina Atwood ended the match with 10 kills followed by
Natalie Davis with nine and
Leigh Anne Huddleston with eight.
Erin Bradley had 39 assists while
Gabriella Zorzoli and
Katherine Owen totaled 12 and 10 digs respectively. On defensive, Atwood contributed three solo blocks and six block assists.
Mobile was led by Kiara Gay with a match high 19 kills followed by Lis Alms with 11 kills and Melody Tenney with 10 kills. Gay also had 21 digs and Katy McCollister registered 18 digs. Tenney recorded a team best 36 assists.
Belhaven will hit the court again on Friday night when the host NCAA Division I Alcorn State in Rugg Arena at 7:00 PM. The Blazers will then host SSAC foe Spring Hill on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
